OBITUARY: Russian Artist Sergey Smirnov Dies Suddenly at Age 53

"Russian artist Sergey Smirnov died suddenly on November 8, 2006, at the age of 53 while visiting the San Francisco area. Smirnov's work has been exclusively represented for the past five years by Fingerhut Group Publishers, San Rafael, CA. In a written eulogy. Alan Fingerhut says, "Sergey Smirnov was proud of his Russian heritage and through his art he taught us about the culture of his beloved homeland. Although he was a humble man, Sergey gained greatness by painting powerful portraits of both Russian heroes and the common person. We will miss him greatly."

Born on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia in 1953, Smirnov graduated as valedictorian with a masters in art from Moscow City Art College in 1983. He was offered a prestigious job of restoring old icons and frescos. Soon he started painting icons and his work is displayed in major Russian churches. He went on to work as a graphic artist, winning many national and international competitions, before devoting himself to painting in 1994. He became the third living artist to have a personal exhibition in the Kremlin's Manezh. During his time with Fingerhut, he released 18 limited editions and participated in numerous solo shows.

Smirnov leaves his wife, Natasha, and two sons, Sergey Jr. and Peter, as well as his mother."
